Google's Bouncer Gets Roughed Up; Why You Should Care

June 28, 2012

With the increasing number of devices and applications in the enterprise, driven by the “consumerization of IT” and Bring Your Own Device (BYOD), companies are faced with the need for visibility as to what risk is being introduced to the enterprise. One might think this is a challenge the handset or mobile platform vendors are going to figure out for us, but there are recent examples which prove the enterprises themselves must be vigilant in protecting their networks which support mobile users. For example, Bouncer, Google Plays' gatekeeper software, which is meant to protect their app store from malicious applications, has been proven to be by no means perfect. A recent security researcher published findings on the effectiveness (or ineffectiveness, some might say) of Bouncer. You can find that article here. As you can see, the uncertainty of security of mobile devices and the applications they run, clearly pose significant risks to enterprise systems and data. This is an area that eEye and BeyondTrust both have been very interested and active in developing solutions for. Our Retina solution provides visibility into possibly malicious applications, vulnerabilities and configuration settings so security teams, compliance officers and IT can understand what risk exists in the enterprise with regards to their mobile deployments, and how to best mitigate them. Retina's integrated, web-based console, smart grouping and analytics warehouse enables security professionals with zero gap coverage across the enterprise, which provides contextual visibility to threats across cloud, mobile, virtual and traditional network devices. Specifically for Google Android devices, and available both in the Google Play store and downloadable from the Retina CS console, BeyondTrust offers the Android agent which brings visibility at the enterprise level. This allows you to inventory, assess and quantify the risk posed by the mobile devices you’re supporting (or not supporting as the case may be) and more efficiently manage the risk posed by those devices. Download a free trial of the Android agent today!
