Granting end-users administrative privileges opens businesses up to security breaches and malicious users. The Principle of Least Privilege is a security best practice that states each subject in a system should be given the most restrictive set of privileges necessary to complete their authorized tasks in order to limit damage from accident, error or unauthorized use. The introduction of User Account Control (UAC) in Microsoft Windows not only brought the topic of Least Privilege to the forefront, but also generated new questions about the best approach for organizations – a trend that promises to continue with Windows 7.
In his presentation, Voskuil will address how enterprises can get to Least Privilege through expert insight and real world examples. Attendees will learn:
- The benefits of implementing a Least Privilege environment
- The risks posed by administrator rights and excess privileges
- How to overcome Least Privilege implementation difficulties and ensure end-users can perform all necessary tasks for their jobs
- Actionable tips for making Least Privilege work in multiple OS environments, such as Windows Vista/2000/XP/2003/Server 2008, as well as the upcoming Windows 7 operating system
Voskuil is responsible for leading BeyondTrust’s product strategy and technical execution. Prior to joining BeyondTrust, he co-founded DesktopStandard, and designed several successful Group Policy-based enterprise desktop management products. The company was acquired by Microsoft in 2006. As a Software Architect in Microsoft’s Management and Services Division, Voskuil assisted with the integration of DesktopStandard’s PolicyMaker into Windows Server 2008 as Group Policy Preferences and of DesktopStandard’s GPOVault into the highly successful Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack (MDOP) as Advanced Group Policy Management (AGPM). Additionally, he served as an architect in the product team that owns Windows Server Update Services and Group Policy. Voskuil is a three-time Microsoft Most Valuable Professional in management, contributor to publications such as Microsoft TechNet, and speaker at technology events including NetPro DEC and TechMentor.
