Job Summary
The Software Development Manager will have responsibility for management and career development of Software Engineering team members. You will have a strong focus on growing individuals, providing feedback, coaching and mentoring, and addressing performance issues. You will enable the team to do their best work. You will coach and mentor team members to improve their skills, product, and domain knowledge, as well as driving strategic initiatives across the department.
As a Software Development Manager, you will challenge and motivate the team to identify areas of potential improvement to drive a culture of high performance and continuous improvement. It is expected of the Software Development Manager to have a strong understanding of all products developed in the department, to offer an expert opinion.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Line management of Software Engineering staff in the department; ensuring wellbeing, performance and ongoing development of skills and experience are managed.
- Interviewing, hiring, onboarding, offboarding, and reviewing both permanent and contract Software Engineers.
- Identification and implementation of initiatives, tools, hardware, software, and techniques to improve the way we develop our software.
- Work with internal stakeholders and teams on ensuring we can accurately track, schedule, and deliver releases.
- Act as a mentor for all members of the team.
- Recognise risks, resourcing issues, skill gaps and training needs in the teams and provide solutions or escalations to address them.
- Communicate problems, risks, or issues with peers and manager.
- Foster innovation, collaboration, and teamwork within the team and across the organization.
- Working to actively promote the company in talks/conferences/meetups/events.
- Effective negotiator of requirements, scope, and timescales with internal stakeholders.
- Work closely with QA Managers, Product Owners, Software Architects, Scrum Masters to ensure alignment across functions.
- Proactive definition and execution of continuous improvement initiatives across teams.
- Any other activities in support of the business which can reasonably be expected to fall within the capabilities of the employee.
Requirements
- A Software Development Manager will be a personable and objective individual.
- A Software Development Manager will be a proactive individual who shows initiative to always look ahead to plan and mitigate any risks to the department.
- A Software Development Manager will be able to report to the Director, Engineering and wider business in absolutes, using metrics and evidence to drive the decision-making process.
- A Software Development Manager will be adaptable to change and someone who can work with all teams in the department to drive development process and strategy.
- A Software Development Manager will share their knowledge at every available opportunity with others within and outside the team.
- A Software Development Manager will have excellent communication skills, both oral and written, and be able to communicate to various audiences and stakeholders.
- Minimum of 1 year of experience in the line management of staff.
- A Software Development Manager will have a solid software development background.
- A Software Development Manager will demonstrate excellent time management, efficiency, and organisational skills.
- A Software Development Manager will demonstrate resiliency when managing multiple activities.
Education and Experience
- Degree or equivalent in a business or IT related discipline or equivalent professional experience in a software development environment.
- Minimum of 5 years commercial software development experience.
- Experience in leading and / or managing development teams.
