What’s New With IAM?

BeyondTrust, December 1st, 2011

What’s New? Well according to some of the participants at the Gartner Identify and Access Management Summit in San Diego, not much.

But I think that’s an unfair assessment of the state of Identity and Access Management technology. There is lots new in the space from more advanced analytics to help simplify your provisioning from people like Sailpoint, the increasing use identify and access management information in SIEM systems from vendors like LogRhythm (and an increasing recognition that managing the privileged identities of your systems and network administrators and DBA’s is vital to defending against advanced persistent threats.

What I think the comment about nothing being new does reflect is that Identify and Access Management is hard and that many of the people at the conference have been wrestling with many of the same problems for many years. There are a lot of new tools and technologies to use but the increasing complexity of our IT environments and higher stakes for security breaches have created as many new challenges to address as IAM vendors have created solutions.

Lots is new – just not the need for good technology, smart security people and the patience to deal with a big challenge.
