Presentation Details
Peretti will serve as a guest speaker during Microsoft’s Theatre Presentation, "The Eternal Triangle". Peretti will discuss how enabling Standard Users to run and install approved applications and ActiveX controls while maintaining a Least Privilege environment can provide enterprises more flexibility when utilizing Windows Vista. As part of this discussion, Peretti will demonstrate to attendees how BeyondTrust Privilege Manager transparently provides elevated privileges for approved applications and managing system settings, enabling organizations to get to a Least Privilege environment.
The Principle of Least Privilege is a security best practice developed by the Department of Defense over 30 years ago. It states that each subject in a system should be given the most restrictive set of privileges necessary to complete their authorized tasks in order to limit the damage resulting from accident, error or unauthorized use.
With User Account Control in Windows Vista, Microsoft has helped move the industry towards a Least Privileged environment and encouraged users to run as a Standard User without administrative privileges. However, a least privilege environment can create usability and support issues for organizations that utilize applications that assume administrative privileges, and/or need to provide users with a method to self install software. BeyondTrust Privilege Manager helps solve these problems for organizations and enables the enforcement of a Least Privilege environment while maintaining end user productivity.
Peretti, an enterprise security expert, has more than 15 years experience engineering security solutions. As CTO of BeyondTrust, Peretti developed a dynamic per-process privilege management system to enable Least Privilege on Windows over three years ago. Before joining BeyondTrust, Peretti founded SecureWave, an endpoint security software developer, and NeoValens S.A., a Windows security provider. He is a frequent speaker at prominent industry events, including RSA Conference 2007 and InfoSecurity New York 2007. Peretti received a B.S. in Information Engineering, from Strathclyde University (UK).
