Growth in Customer Base and Long List of Honors Fueled by Growing Recognition of Least Privilege as a Key Component of Enterprise Security Strategy
PORTSMOUTH, NH. – February 19, 2008 — BeyondTrust Corporation, the first provider of Least Privilege Management solutions, today announced a 43 percent increase in its customer base in 2007. The increase highlights a jump in Vista-related sales and the growing recognition that a Least Privilege environment where end-users operate without administrator rights is a crucial aspect of information security. BeyondTrust created the first Least Privilege Management product for Windows in 2004, enabling organizations to remove local administrator rights while still allowing end-users to perform all approved activities. Over the past year, the adoption of Microsoft Vista and the U.S. government’s standard desktop configuration mandate have validated BeyondTrust’s pioneering view. Removing administrator rights is a central focus of both initiatives.
"BeyondTrust is proud to have played a leading role in the adoption of Least Privilege in the financial service, healthcare, government and other industries," said CEO John Moyer. "Our rapidly growing customer base and long list of honors in 2007 demonstrate the benefits of removing administrator rights and that Least Privilege security has arrived."
Least Privilege strengthens security by limiting users to the permissions they need to do their jobs. BeyondTrust’s flagship Privilege Manager software was the first product to enable Least Privilege in Windows environments by allowing organizations to eliminate administrator rights and assign elevated privileges only to authorized applications when they are required. Privilege Manager has quickly become the most widely used product for Least Privilege Management, protecting hundreds of companies against malware, data theft and malicious use.
In 2007, the release of Windows Vista raised the profile of Least Privilege, and adoption of the new operating system has boosted enterprise sales for BeyondTrust. During the past year, BeyondTrust released two new versions of its flagship software. Privilege Manager 3.0 was the first product to manage privileges in Vista environments. Privilege Manager 3.5 was the first product to co-exist with the security enhancements in Vista including IE protected mode while suppressing the User Account Control prompts that have drawn so much negative attention. In the last three months of 2007, approximately one-fourth of new enterprise customers purchased Privilege Manager to facilitate their deployment of Vista. As validation of BeyondTrust's approach, a Microsoft official took the rare step of stating in an August 2007 press release that Windows Vista and Privilege Manager were part of a best-of-breed solution to the Least Privilege problem.
BeyondTrust enjoyed a record level of recognition in 2007 fueled by positive media coverage, and the company’s experts contributed their Least Privilege expertise at prominent industry events. CTO Marco Peretti was invited to speak about Least Privilege at several conferences, including RSA, InfoSecurity and RSA Europe, where he presented as part of Microsoft’s own exhibit. BeyondTrust was also widely quoted in print and online news outlets, including eWEEK, InfoWorld, Computerworld, Network World, Redmond, SC Magazine and SearchSecurity.com.
Privilege Manager earned a number of honors in 2007, including a selection as "Technology of the Year" by InfoWorld in the category of "Best Windows Client Security." Privilege Manager also earned two Editors’ Choice Awards from Redmond magazine and was named "Hot Pick" in a product review by Information Security magazine. Privilege Manager also won the "Tech-Ed Attendees’ Pick" award by Penton Media’s Windows IT Pro, SQL Server Magazine and Office & SharePoint Pro.com, and Info Security Products Guide named BeyondTrust a "Hot Company."
About BeyondTrust Privilege Manager
BeyondTrust Privilege Manager, initially released in 2004, is the first Least Privilege Management solution for Windows. Privilege Manager enables network administrators to remove administrative privileges from end-users while still allowing end-users to run all required applications, processes and ActiveX controls that require administrative privileges. Privilege Manager lets network administrators attach permission levels to Windows applications to enforce enterprise security policy and enable users to perform approved activities. By removing the need to grant administrative rights to end-users, IT departments eliminate what is otherwise the Achilles heel of the desktop – end-users with administrative power that can be exploited by malware and malicious intent to change security settings and disable other security solutions. Privilege Manager is easy to implement. It plugs directly into Group Policy, the existing Windows security infrastructure. It is transparent to the end-user, without pop-ups or dialogue boxes, and supports Windows 2000, XP, Server 2003 and Windows Vista. In a Vista environment, Privilege Manager works with User Account Control to reduce pop-ups.
