BeyondTrust Publishes Privilege Management eBook
“Goldie Locks and the Three Least Privilege Desktops” Tells the Story of Finding Privileges that are “Just Right”
CARLSBAD, Calif. – April 5, 2011 — BeyondTrust, the leading provider of privilege delegation and authorization management, today published the first ever ebook story on least privilege, authored by Derek Melber, Microsoft Group Policy Most Valuable Professional (MVP). “Goldie Locks and the Three Least Privileged Desktops” is a graphic storybook following the adventures of “Goldie Locks,” a new professional entering the workforce, as she finds a balance in administrative privileges that protects the desktop without hampering productivity.
The ebook is available for free online at: http://www.beyondtrust.com/WhitePapers/ebook-goldielocks.aspx
In the story, Goldie Locks plays the role of a recent college graduate, with degrees in marketing and multimedia communications, who is just starting her position in marketing for a mid-sized IT company. With an understanding of Visual Basic, networking and IT, she’s a desktop power user.
The book follows Goldie’s struggles and ultimate success as she strives to find a productive computer. The under-privileged computer doesn’t allow her to install applications, Internet Explorer add-ons or Active X plug-ins that she needs to be able to do her job effectively. The over-privileged computer was full of malware and configuration issues that created errors and inhibited productivity. Finally, Goldie finds the computer that is just right and convinces IT to standardize on an ideally privileged configuration.
“It’s a story book format that describes the most fundamental issue with solving administrative privileges on the desktop – finding a balance of privileges that is just right,” said Derek Melber, Microsoft MVP and book author. “Desktop users can’t be allowed to run as local administrators, nor can they be blocked from everything that requires administrative privileges, so corporations have to find a balance. The Goldie Locks story is all about exposing the perfect balance between the two extremes. That’s what BeyondTrust PowerBroker Desktops does for enterprises and administrative privileges using your existing Group Policy infrastructure.”
