BeyondTrust Announces New Reporting Capabilities and End-User Experience
Enhancements in PowerBroker Desktops 5.1
CARLSBAD, Calif. – October 10, 2011 – BeyondTrust, the leading provider of privilege delegation and authorization management solutions, today announced the release of PowerBroker® Desktops, Windows Edition v5.1. This release features enhanced, standalone reporting capabilities providing network administrators unprecedented visibility into how elevated privileges are used on desktops. By leveraging native Microsoft technology, including Event Forwarding and SQL Server, PowerBroker desktops can provide reporting data on who is using elevated privileges, what applications require administrator privileges to run, and even Microsoft User Account Control (UAC) usage across the enterprise. The release also includes improvements to end-user messaging, allowing organizations to display customized message boxes based on various conditions on the desktop.
PowerBroker Desktops Reporting Console improves upon the popular Automatic Rule Generation utility that previously provided the fastest, easiest and most cost-effective path to least privilege. With the new reporting console and more intuitive automatic rule generation, removing administrator privileges is even faster and easier than in previous versions of PowerBroker Desktops. The reporting console leverages native Windows technologies, eliminating the need for additional hardware or infrastructure, which is a requirement for many competing products. Charts and graphs are automatically generated so that network administrators can have snapshot views of the environment as it pertains to privileged operations. These charts and graphs are also extremely valuable to executives and risk management personnel to show effective security policy and return on investment (ROI). Dashboard reports include:
- Applications requiring administrator privileges
- Applications run with administrator privileges on demand
- Metrics on which domain accounts and local accounts are local administrators
- Computers with extraneous local administrator accounts
- Comprehensive User Account Control (UAC) usage reporting
- ActiveX installation reporting
- Rule Usage Reporting
"Reporting is critical in any project to improve security on desktops. Not only should reports be useful for network administrators, but they should also be useful for executives and compliance personnel who need to make business decisions based on real data. Reporting on the number of users who are administrators on the network allows executives to see a burn-down of users who are transitioning from Administrators to Standard Users as PowerBroker Desktops is rolled out," said Peter Beauregard, senior director of program management at BeyondTrust. "BeyondTrust continues to be dedicated to providing the easiest, most automated approach for organizations that wish to dramatically improve security by removing administrator privileges from end users."
PowerBroker Desktops 5.1 also includes improved end user messaging customizations, providing network administrators the ability to display custom messages to end users based on various conditions. Examples include displaying of customized message boxes when applications require administrator privileges, replacements for User Account Control (UAC) dialogs, On-Demand elevation prompting and more. The enhanced message box capabilities provide end users with a smooth transition to least privilege.
"The new reporting features in PowerBroker Desktops 5.1 allows us to show our executive team the effectiveness of our rollout and show how it has improved security across our enterprise," said Mark Howard, PC operations manager at Austin Powder. "The improved customized messaging allows us to enhance the end user experience with the product and even display the Austin Powder logos and legal disclaimers."
"We are participating at the GITEX conference in Dubai this week and welcome our customers as well as those interested in learning more about how quick and easy it is to implement least privilege with PowerBroker Desktops 5.1 to meet with our team," said Brian Murphy, vice president of international sales at BeyondTrust.
